What is the Coding Accuracy Support System (CASS)?
CASS (Coding Accuracy Support System) is a formal certification process that the United States Postal Service (USPS) requires bulk mailers to perform prior to sending mail. Addresses are run through address cleansing software which fixes typos, punctuations, and spelling errors. Addresses are formatted based on USPS guidelines and edited based on the address the customer has on file with USPS. There is a barcode above the billing address, called a onecode barcode, that is displayed on the printed bills only.
Use the Look Up a ZIP Code tool to confirm your customer's address. If the address is not correct in this database, your customer must contact USPS to have the address updated.
Keying errors and missing information are the most common reasons that addresses cannot be certified. Periodically run the Uncertified Addresses report in Client Connect to learn which address barcodes can't be assigned.
Encourage customers to use electronic billing (email/ebill) whenever possible, as this helps prevent USPS issues.
